McDonnel Douglas DC-10-30CF | World Airways | N113WA | oversoot at Boston and ended in the harbour

Saturday 23 January 1982 World Airways DC-10-30CF N113WA c/n 47821

DSP flight 30 from Newark (EWR) to Boston (BOS) with 12 crew and 200 passengers.

Non-precision instrument approach to 9191 ft long RW 15R. Too high approach speed due to malfunction of the AT/SC system. Touched down 2800 ft past the threshold. The RW was ice-covered and breaking friction was very poor. The crew saw they could not stop in time and steard the aircraft to the left of the runway to avoid the approach light pier. The aircraft came to a stop in shallow water of Boston Harbor 250 ft past the RW end and 110 ft to the left of the centreline.

First flight : 1980 Airframe hrs : 6327 engines : GE CF6-50C2. 2 people were missing after the crash and presumed dead. Wind 165°/3 kts. Aircraft landing weight : 365000 lb (165564 kg), flaps 35°, Vappr 160 kts. location : +-50m 42°21’17”N 70°59’20”W

McDonnel Douglas DC-10-30CF | Spantax | EC-DEG | Sad remains of a DC-10 wide body jetliner Monday 13 September 1982 Spantax DC-10-30CF EC-DEG c/n 46962 . Flight BX995 from Malaga (MGP), Spain to New York (JFK), USA with 13 crew and 381 passengers. First flight : 1977. Take-off from 3200m long RW 14. Shortly before V1 (162 kt) a nosewheel burst. The crew felt vibrations but continued to accelerate through VR. When the captain tried to rotate the vibration became so bad that the decided to abort the take-off. But then already speed was at 184 kt with only 1295m runway left. The aircraft overran the runway with 110 kts collided with an ILS building and crossed a highway and finally stopped 450m past the runway. Airframe hrs : 15364 cycles : 4008 engines : GE CF6-50C1, 50 people died in the crash and 41 serious injured. TOW 239345 [kg] flaps 8° V1 : 162 kts VR 169 kts V2 182 kts. The people died from the resulting fire, causing toxic gases and CO2 suffocating not by trauma from the crash forces. Wind 140°/15 kts > temp : 25°C. location : +- 25m 36°39’48”N 04°28’56”W
